The purpose of the American Legion Auxiliary National Security Committee is to maintain and provide a strong national defense, strengthening our military families, and preparing our population for reponse to national and manmade disasters.
National Security Work for Units
The Unit should acquaint all of its members with the existing situation in regard to national security by providing a study of the subject at Unit meetings. Every Unit should endeavor to give its members an understanding of the necessity of maintaining an adequate national security.
The American Legion Auxiliary recognizes that natural disasters and crime can also threaten our national security. Therefore, the national Security program, was expanded to include emergency planning and crime prevention.
While we cannot stop natural disasters from occurring, we can change the way America deals with them through Project Impact, a project of the Federal Emergency management Agency (FEMA). The goal is to reduce the personal and economic costs of disasters in a community by planning and preparation.
Crime prevention, neighborhood watch, support for police and fie departments help to strengthen our communities and contribute to the national security.
Information on National Security
Informative material on national security subjects can be obtained from Department Headquarters or the National Security Division of The American Legion, 1608 K Street, NW, Washington. Washington, D.C. 20006. These materials include suggested talks on national security, pamphlets, ad the program of national security activities recommended for the year. The objectives of The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary for the year are outlined annually by the National Convention. Every Unit should familiarize itself with these objectives and give its full support to their achievement.
Salute to an Active Duty Service Member
A service member from each branch of service will be recognized during the Department and National Convention.- Nominees should be willing to attend the Department Convention, if possible and if selected as the overall Department winner should be willing to attend the National Convention.
- A brief narrative of their military service should be included.
- The service member writes a narrative (750 words or less) or creates a video (3 minutes or less) that shows them discussing their service both in and out of uniform.
- Entry must have the Nominee’s name, address, Unit Name and Number, and the signature of the Unit President or National Security Chairman
- One applicant for each branch of service (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard) per Unit
- All entries must be submitted online through the National website by the deadline date (June 1) and sent to the Department National Security Chairman.
